Bert’s efforts started with a simple act in 1950 — writing letters to pharmaceutical companies asking for donations of medicines and medical supplies. Leveraging her faith community’s international network, she began stocking the shelves of needy clinics throughout the world.
When Lederle Labs of the American Cyanamid Corporation responded to her request by sending 48 drums—nearly a ton—of vitamins for clinics in India, a chain reaction of generosity was sparked.
From a one-woman effort to a global movement
Bert’s drive and ambition inspired others to join her mission of bringing lifesaving care to others. She partnered with faith-based organizations that shared her dream: creating a centralized system to deliver critical medical supplies to health care workers who needed them.
Within a decade, her grassroots effort grew into a global movement. What started as a small beginning became a trusted, worldwide health organization, delivering hope and healing to some of the most remote communities on Earth.
